Acclimatize Update – Coin Collect

Coin CollectAs apart of my game (Acclimatize) I have added in a score system, in which the player collects coins to increase their score. I have set it up fairly basically; player runs over coin, coin is destroyed (“Collected”), score display in the UI increases. Currently this score system doesn’t really serve any purpose other than giving the player a secondary objective when playing the game. However, incrementing this feature allows for different possibilities in the future when the full game is made. For example; leader boards, in game store to buy items (character and boosts) and more.

Once again I am very happy with the progress I am making with this game, I really feel like it is coming together. however, there is still a lot of work to be done, but I feel like we are working through the tasks at hand very quickly. I am looking very forward to getting this game to a stage where people can trial it out and we can get feedback as I am really happy with how it is looking, and I’m confident that the demo will look even better.

Acclimatize Progress

Acclimatize Progress.gif

Over the last week or so I have been collaboratively working on a game called Acclimatize with Josh and Liam. The video above shows the current state at which the game is at. I have put a lot of effort and work in this game so far and I am very happy with the way it is turning out. Apart from the characters featured in the video (which were created by Josh) I am responsible for the reset of the progress that the game has made. While I have processed a lot of my attention on creating what you can see above, Josh has been putting his focuses on creating game characters for us to put into the game, while Liam worked on concept art. However, the idea was created collaboratively as a team.

Overall, I am very happy with all of the progress the game demo has already shown. I am really looking forward to getting the demo fully working for people to try out so that we can get feedback and use that to improve the game and complete the fully working game for our portfolio.

Next steps are to setup the animations properly for all 3 characters in Unity as well as building all four levels for the demo and linking them to the main menu. As well as this I need to add a coin system which allows for the player to collect coins and for a score to be kept.

Juicing my Pachinko Machine – Adding Sound Effects.

In order to improve my game I have practiced making my own sound effects using http://www.Bfxr.net and adding them into my game. I have create reasonably basic sound effects which play when; a peg or wall or goal is hit, player drops a ball, level is complete and when the level is failed. I feel like this sound effects add more depth and interest to the game, despite how basic they are.

I am happy with the new skills I have learned this lesson as I now know an easy way of making my own sound effects, as well as known how to add sound effects into other games to improve them. I look forward to experimenting with sound effects in my other games, especially my ball game and racing game to make them more interesting and fun to play.

Overall, I am happy with my sound effects, however I do want to improve them as they aren’t the best the could possibly be. I plan on working on creating improved sound effects which better suit my game, in my own time.

Working on the main menu for racing game

I have spent some time today working on a concept, for the start menu, for mine and Ethan’s racing game. It doesn’t look amazing but it will likely be the main menu we use for our demo when the game is produced for testing and feedback, as in my opinion it still does look fairly professional and visually appealing.

I am very happy with the quick progress we are making with our game so far. We have both spent a fair amount of time, so far, modelling assets, researching and attempting to make the scripts for the game. I look forward to seeing where we can take this game and how it turns out.

Spaceship Game

In the last two lessons with Ant we have been working on creating a spaceship game. He helped us learn the basic script to make the game playable, but then it was up to us to adapt them and introduce other scripts to make the game enjoyable and fun to play.

So far I have; a spaceship which is fully controllable with a keyboard or controller, cannons which fire seeking missile which will track and destroy the spaceship on impact, motion sensitive mines which begin to track the spaceship to destroy it when the ship gets within a certain distance of them. As well as this I have also added in a motion sensitive door which opens once the ship is close enough to it and a level tracker in the top right corner of the screen.

I am very pleased with how the game is turning out so far, especially for it being early stages and being made within a short period of time. I feel like I have learned a lot of useful scripts that can be used in different games and contexts to enhance the enjoyment of a game. I am looking forward to expanding my game by introducing more mechanics and adding more levels and a main menu system to start creating a fully made game. As well as this I look forward to introducing these new mechanics into other games, such as my ball game, to improve them.

Next steps are going to be to adjust the camera angle as im not very happy with the way it looks, and also adding more colour to the walls and floor to make it look better with the other assets.

Ball Game Full Demo

I have recently been putting a fair bit of work into my ball game. I hope to have a fairly large scale game by Christmas, therefore for now I have released a demo of my game for people to try out and give me feedback so that I can eventually build a better game which is portfolio worthy.

Overall, I am very pleased with how my demo has turned out and I have already received some very positive feedback and all criticism are being used to better the game. I have some big ambitions for what I want my game to turn out like, therefore I am putting quite a bit of time and effort into my game.

Try out my game here. And also check out the teaser video!!!

Ball Game Feedback and Response

I made my game available for testing, in which people played my game (at the stage it is currently at) and I was able to get feedback. I am then going to use my feedback to improve my game and to get it closer to being a completed, publishable game.

My main visions for the game so far are to add the main menu system (including start, instructions and possibly collectables), add more enemy types, increase the number of levels, and to add in improved models and sky block artwork.

From the feedback I have received I have found that people enjoyed the difficulty progression through the levels, as it made them have to think more about what they were doing in order to get through the level. As well as this I also observed that the game proved, in my opinion, to be slightly addictive and rage-inducing, as people desperately wanted to complete the levels they were struggling with.

I am very pleased this how my game is currently and the feedback I have received. I feel like there is plenty scope for my game to be improved and to become a portfolio worthy piece.

Trial my game out at the current stage it is at.

Pachinko Machine Updated – Unity

Pachinko MachineCapture.PNGCapture 2

Today I decided to change the look of my Pachinko Machine to make it more interesting. I have modified not only the level’s appearance but also the script of the game. I have adjusted the look of the level by adding in a lot more pegs per level (only level 1 is complete). I plan on increasing the number of pegs gradually either per level or per 5 levels (increasing level difficulty in increments). As well as changing my level appearance I have also modified the play of my game by adjusting the “Droball” script and adding in a “PachinoBall” script. By doing so, the player is now limited to only 20 balls per level, rather than infinite, however if they hit the goal they have 1 ball returned to them. In order to progress level, you have to eliminate a certain amount of the pegs – I plan to making this every peg to progress.

Overall, I am very happy with my game so far and I feel it is going very well for only learning programming for a few weeks now. I cant wait to learn more skills in the future to further improve my game. Personally the next steps for me, to improve my Pachinko Machine, is to begin laying out more levels, then making them look more appealing by adding in my own art work and hopefully bringing the game together.

After this, my target for the game is going to be to program and design a menu system game, possibly with different difficulties which link to different difficulty of level. I understand that this will be difficult but I believe it will really improve my game.

Ball Game Gameplay

I have spent some time adding extra features and improving my levels, for my ball game, today. I have added jump controls for my player, as well as (automatic) move and spin scripts for my enemies – making my levels harder and more complex. The short gif below highlights some gameplay of the first few levels. I plan to improve my assets in the near future by creating 3D models for the enemies and goal, to begin with, and possibly also introducing multiple kinds of enemies.Ball game gameplay.gif
