Pixel Art Platforms

PixelArtPlatforms

Above are some more pixel art designs I have done to add to my asset list and to be used in my potential game. I have already got some ideas down in my own private notes but once I finalise my ideas I will make a blog post explaining them all, along with some concept art of what the game could look like. These posts won’t be as frequent as some others because I work on this project generally on a night time after working on other (“bigger”) projects, as a way to decline and also be creative.

I have created some fairly simple platforms above that can be used in a modular format to create the basics of my level layout. I also want to create bridges and other platforms to be used in my game so it doesn’t all the the same. However, I do plan on making it all follow a set colour scheme, with possibly a few twists throughout.

I am overall, very pleased with how these turned out and I believe they could make a very nice game layout. Only thing I would do personally to improve, is create more variety of platforms (in different forms).

Expanding my pixel art asset collection – Food

I am currently working on a few very large projects which consist of a lot of detail (one of which is Sci-fi gun and another of which is a full Sci-fi room). hence the lack of posts recently. My apologies.

However, in between working on these projects I have also been growing my pixel art asset list so that I can attempt to make my own pixel art game eventually. I am working on making all varieties of pixel art assets to meet all possible requirements my future game may have. I have already got a few ideas for the root I want my game to go down but as things change, my ideas will develop. A clear example of this will be seen when the outline of my Sci-fi room is posted as it has taken a big change (for the better in my opinion) compared to the original block out.

Pixel Art Head

PixelArtHead

I have spent more time recently working on improving my pixel art skills. I really enjoy art as a whole and pixel art has always interested me, but I have never felt like I was very good at it, therefore I am trying to improve my pixel art because I really enjoy the look of pixel art games and I would love to make one myself someday.

In one of my previous posts, I showed a pixel art rabbit character which is my prefered style of pixel art (simplistic look), compared to the style above which shows more complex pixel art.

Overall, I am fairly happy with the result of the character head above as I feel it turned out very well and is of a fair standard, for not much experience doing pixel art. However, as I stated, this isn’t a style of pixel art which I am a huge fan of and I prefer a slightly more simplistic look of pixel art. I do plan on still practising this kind of pixel art but just not as much as the more simplistic style which I showed in my rabbit post.

Pixel Art Rabbit Animation

I decided that I would have some fun and experiment in making a small pixel art animation. I decided to make this fairly simple rabbit character, which I made in four different view points (front, back, left side view and right side view) using Adobe Photoshop. The Character only consists of seven different colours and follows a fairly simple colour pallet, as well as being of a reasonably small size.

To create this animation I simply started with the initial character design. From there I was able to add in guide lines to get the proportions correct for the other three views. Whereas the shading and highlights were done by eye, using my knowledge of perspective which I have from previous art experience I have from my love for art.

I am overall quite happy with the final product. I realise it is by no means a complex or impressive piece of work. However, I believe that it is good practice in animation and character design for games. It is even possible that I could use this character in a game further down the line or even just as a concept in a game before a specific character is created. I like being able to have a collection of assets (no matter what they may be) so that I have a big selection when it comes to creating games.

For my next artistic project I hope to make a stylised 2D character. I hope to make it in the style of which a character would be made for a platform game for example. I believe a generic character like this would also be good practice to create and would also be useful to keep with my other assets for potential further use.
