Cardboard Box Model – UV Mapping in Maya

Above is a simple cardboard box model I created, in Maya, so I could practice UV mapping for the very first time. Through doing this I have learned how to unwrap basic shapes. I plan on learning how to do more complex models and shapes as soon as possible, this way I can then texture better quality models. I am very happy with the progress I made doing this as prior to this lesson I didn’t know to UV map. However, during this process I did come across certain problems which slowed down my process but I used tutorials along with my own intuition to over come this.

Today I learned how to model using basic shapes and tools in Maya. In the lesson I have began creating a simple spacecraft (a screenshot is above). The main skills I learned were how to insert shapes, manipulate them (using tools such as ‘extrude’ for example), and move around.

One issue I had was changing the view of my work. I over came this by getting help from the teacher (Matt). From getting his help I now know that pressing / holding the space key provide me with a range of options for changing my view.

I’d personally say I have made great progress this lesson as I was able to begin modelling an actually object fairly quickly without any prior experience. I look forward to expanding my knowledge further and being able to make more complex models.
