Office Chair 3D Model

When creating the urban apartment room I had to create a variety of 3D models using Maya. I plan on breaking down all of those models into a series of in-depth blog posts, highlighting the main models I have created and used.

This post shows a fairly basic office chair which I have modelled to be used at the desk in the room. My greatest difficulty when modelling this chair was getting the arms to look realistic and not squared.

Overall, I am very happy with this model as I feel like it meets the realistic look of the scene it is in. I also think that it is a good example of my ability to use reference and various tools in Maya to create a good looking final result.

SCI-FI Medical Bed 3D Model – Walking Simulator Project

I have recently been modelling a medical bed 3D model for the walking simulator project my class is doing. The purpose of this model is to go inside the medic-bay on board the space station. I have included some basic, un-textured models of the bed below.

Overall, I am fairly pleased with the way this model has turned out as I feel like it fits its purpose and theme well. My only quarrel is that it has to be as low poly as possible, therefore I don’t believe that the model looks as good as it could do.

Urban Apartment Model – Working Progress

For a little while now I have been gradually making an urban style apartment room for my room project for Matt. As well as this I have been gradually working on a Sci-Fi spaceship cabin room for the room project with matt. However, I have been enjoying making this room more, and therefore I have progressed further with it. I have decided to make two rooms for the assignment for a couple reasons; firstly, it gets me modelling as much as possible and with different styles, and it also allows me to decided, closer to the deadline, which project I am happier with and would like to submit.

Urban and street-wear style is very much so my life and it is a style that I love, therefore my views of this style have greatly affected my work in this project. I feel like my knowledge of the style I have used has helped me during this project, by knowing common styles or furniture and colour schemes to go into my room.

Before beginning this project I made sure to do plenty of research into urban apartment and rooms: looking at entire room layouts, individuals items and even colour schemes. My project is a the majority high poly as I wanted to experiment with high poly/realistic 3D modelling. Below are some working progress (basic) renders of how my apartment currently looks.

Apartment 1

Overall, I am very happy with how this project is turning out. I am really looking forward to finishing it off. I have some really good ideas for how I want the room to look.  My aim is to make the most realistic 3D model (textured) I can possibly make. An example of what I plan on doing is adding large floor to ceiling windows in place of the missing wall, I will model this last so that the interior of the room is easier to navigate around and model.

3D Character Model (SWAT) – Adobe Fuse

I spent time today experimenting with Adobe Fuse. In this time I created my own 3D model of a person, which I made look like a “SWAT” solider. I began by creating the raw human without any clothing before customising it and adding clothing it make it have the final result I show below. I am overall very pleased with the way the character has turned out and in my opinion It could easily be used in a 3D shooting game and fit in well.

After this I experimented with animating my character. I decided to create a variety of short fighting animations which could be pieced together to make a fighting / hand to hand combat animation, in a game. I plan on learning how to do this in the next VFX lesson so that I can get a good looking final result.

Blocking Out My Room

Block Out

As I stated in my last post, my next step was to block out what I envisioned for my sci-fi room (as shown above in a very basic Arnold render). I don’t see this plan as something that needs to be followed to the ‘T’ or limit me by any means, instead, I view it as a guide to keep me on track and allow me to be creative with my room. This simple model shows the basic ideas I have in my head. Next step is to begin modelling, starting with the room its self and then moving on from there.

Sci-Fi Room Preperation

After taking a few days to recover from being quite unwell (Sorry for no posts during this time) I have begun to prepare for my Sci-fi room, which I plan to make for the “hidden room” project set by Matt. I have decided that I am going to go with a kind of cabin style room (possibly on board a spaceship).

To get some ideas for how my room can look, I have gathered some examples for reference and have used them to get a good image of how I want my room to look, and also a good idea of the colour scheme to follow to make it match the style. As well as this I have also started creating an asset list which personally suits my workflow and helps me work as effectively as possible, stopping me forgetting ideas I have. My next step is going to be to block out the model of the room and possibly create some concept art to also help me create the room how I want it to be.

Updated Bed Room 3D Model

roomroom 1

I feel like lately I have been making really good progress on my room in Maya. In my opinion my skills are gradually improving as well as the complexity and quality of my models making them appear more professional. Personally, I am very happy with my room so far as I feel it is to a fairly high standard so far.

However, obviously my room still does require work, for example I would like to model an improved office chair for my room, rather than using the one I had previously made earlier in the course as I don’t believe it is a good representation of my current abilities. This is going to be one of the next models I plan to make. Along with this I also plan on adding art work to my room, to make the room appear more realistic, more visually appealing and also add personality to my room, making it more unique.

Asset List:

  • Bed
  • Door
  • Wardrobe
  • Desk
  • Storage Unit
  • Macbook
  • Monitors
  • Speakers
  • Mouse (PC and Mac)
  • IMac
  • KeyBoard (PC and Mac)
  • Ipad
  • Lamp
  • TV
  • Light Switch
  • Shoe Boxes

New Gaming Mouse Model

Above are some rendered images of a gaming mouse I have created after a lot of struggling. This may not be very complex for those who are very experienced with Maya or even 3D modelling in general, but as I have only been using Maya or even modelling for just around a month now, this is, in my opinion, the most complex model I have done and I am extremely happy with the way it has turned out. I am really enjoying 3D modelling, I love the creativity it allows and anyone who can appreciate the ability to create anything you want will agree.

Admittedly, this model took me longer than it probably should have considering I started it almost a week ago and throughout the week I have put in hours of time just to get this mouse to look good. Throughout the week, I have watched various videos and read multiple articles to be able to learn the skills to create this mouse. I am overall, very happy with the way it has turned out. However, I would love to be able to texture it but my UV mapping skills and texturing skills are still fairly poor as of now, and I hope to improve them as my knowledge of Maya increases. In my opinion, modelling should be my main focus to learn before texturing.

Likewise, I would also like to be able to improve the time that I am able to make models of this complexity in. I understand that that will come with time, as I know that as of now that I would still likely need to research again before attempting another mouse as it was my first time ever using the skills and techniques.

I will add this mouse to my room model as I feel that it is a big improvement over my previous attempt which I created in my first couple of weeks learning how to 3D model. After adding the mouse I also plan to improve the keyboard and monitor, neither of which will be to the complexity of the mouse but will hopefully be of a better standard than my previous attempts.

Creating a realistic looking bed model

bed occlusionbed wire frame

Above is two Arnold renders I created to highlight the recent update I have made to my blanket making it appear more realistic in my opinion. I believe by doing this it adds to my overall room model and makes it look more visually appealing.

To create this blanket I first set the bed as a passive collider, I then created a plane (this would be my blanket) and set it as a “nCloth”. Once I had done this I then added gravity to the scene and ran the simulation. After waiting a few moments the blanket fell naturally around the bed. I could have left it there but I decided to tweak it and adjust to get it to look the way I wanted.

When creating the blanket I did have a few issues, however, they were easily resolved. One issue I had was that the simulation wasn’t long enough for the blanket to fall to the bed. This was simply fixed however by extending the number of frames on the timeline, this ensured that the blanket simulation could finish.

Looking back I would like to make a few changes but I believe, for where my skills are currently at,  I’m very pleased with the way it looks.

Vent Modula System For Walking Simulator Game

vent 1vent 2

Above is a modular vent system I have created in Maya for the Sci-fi walking simulator game. I have made it modular so that any size / style vent can be created easily to be used in the game, rather than being a fixed shape and size. I have used simple shapes in Maya to create the vents meaning it is low poly and fits the walking sim requirements.

Overall, I am very happy with this model as I feel that is can be used in many different situations to add extra detail to a model making it appear more realistic. I am especially happy with the fan attachment to the vent which I feel is very similar to a real life vent fan and looks very realistic.
