Secret Room Final Submission

1234

Above is my final submission for the secret room project set by Matt. I have included four renders of the room I decided to submit. As well as this room I have also created two other rooms, which I was debating amongst, to submit for this project. Personally, I found this room the most fitting room out of the three for the project task.

For the room project, I have created a dark basement scene which I feel creates an ominous setting, making the scene (in my opinion) perfect for a horror game.  I am very happy with how the scene has turned out, despite it being the third of the three scenes I created. I really enjoy experimenting with the derelict theme. I could really feel my modelling and texture skills improving during the course of this project.

I am extremely grateful for the opportunities this project gave me as it allowed me to experiment with three different themes (Urban, Derelict and Sci-Fi) which therefore allowed me to get experience working with different styles. I hope that this will benefit me in the future if I am ever required to model something with one of these themes. I will also be posting about the other rooms I have created, but as I previously stated, this is the room I am submitting for the secret room project.

Portfolio Game (Acclimatize) – Game Platform Block

Grass Block Platform

As myself, Liam and Josh are working on a game together for our portfolios, Acclimatize, I have went ahead and created a game block which will work in a modular fashion to create platforms in our game. As we have gone for a stylised look, I have created my own pixel art to texture the block. I created a variety of top, side and bottom pieces allowing for the blogs to appear more unique and random when used in the game. This may not be the final artwork we go with but as far as I’m concerned it is more than suitable for the demo of the game.

I am overall very happy with how this game piece has turned out and I look forward to using it to begin building levels for our 2.5D game. Personally, I feel like my texturing skills are improving over time, as I learn new techniques for making visually appealing models. Hopes are that we can produce a basic working game by Christmas.

Animating my Magica Voxel rabbit character

walking rabbit

I have spent some time today animating my rabbit character, using Maximo, to be used in my 2.5D platform game after the Christmas break. I made multiple animations which will be used in various situations in the game. The example above is a walking animation which will play every time the player walks forwards. I have also created; a running, jumping, crouched walking, dying and dancing animation which will be used, when appropriate, throughout my game. I also plan on making an idle animation pose to be used when character is standing still, however, I am not sure as of right now, how I want this to look, so I will be doing this animation further in the future.

I am happy with how my animations are already looking as they look like they would easily fit into the style game I envision making. I have used a stylised look, to make a ‘cartoony-like’ feel, which I hope will appeal to all a wide audience. I can’t wait to actually start building this game, but for now I am putting a lot of my attention towards my portfolio game with Josh and Liam. I will post more information on our project shortly.

3D Modelling My Mech Design

Last week in Tony’s class I created concept art of my own mechanical enemy. Today in his class I spent time using my previously created art as reference to make a 3D model of the mech. I am happy with how it has turned out so far however there is still improvement I would like to make to make it the best I could. I would like to make the model more complex in order to add more detail.

I plan on animating this model and using it to do some sort of VFX with, therefore, for I plan on texturing this model in the near future so it looks as good as possible to be displayed in my portfolio.

Overall, I am fairly happy with how my mech has turned out. I did have some difficulties, however, as following my own reference was a bit difficult but I personally think it turned out good.

Derelict Basement 3D Room Model Progress

porgress

For the last few days I have been working on an abandoned / derelict style basement 3D model. I feel like doing a scene in this style helps improve my skills in maya: not only when modelling but also when texturing. In my opinion, modelling and texturing in different styles, such as; modern, futuristic, abandoned, etc, really help show my diversity and I personally think it makes me more appealing to an employer as I will have practice with a variety of styles.

Overall I feel like the room is coming together nicely. I am enjoying challenging myself with this derelict style compared to the other styles I have been making prior. I have some good ideas to put in the scene, but at the moment I am just currently figuring out where different objects can go and then creating them, in the hopes of making the best looking scene possible.

Personally, since joining this course I feel like my skills have developed massively since day one. I am so grateful for all that I have learned, I have really been enjoying 3D modelling and the entire Next Gen course as a whole, to be honest. I can’t wait to continue with the course, and develop more and more as I go.

Abandoned Room Project Research

Abandoned Rooms.png

I have decided that I want to attempt to make an abandoned 3D room model. I feel like this is going to help make me a more diverse 3D modeller as it will improve my ability to model different types of models and texture in different styles. Personally, I think that being able to model; a modern apartment, derelict building and futuristic room, demonstrates a range of skills and abilities.

I hope that being able to learn the skills required to 3D model different style rooms will both improve my portfolio and make me more appealing to people in the industry as I will have the skills required to make whatever is required. I am looking forward to making the derelict room, however I know that it will be a challenge trying to make the different models look aged and broken.

3D Pixel Art Character Creation – Magica Voxel

rabbit display imageplatforms display image

Today I spent some time learning how to use a free 3D modelling program called ‘Magica Voxel’. It is a fairly simple to use piece of software, and I feel like I picked it up quite quickly. It works on a block based 3D modelling basis, basically 3D pixel art. As I am a big fan of pixel art, which is obvious to tell from my blog, I have really enjoyed using this and experimenting with this software.

I am reasonably happy with how my models have turned out, but obviously I have only been using this program for just over an hour and my models aren’t anything special at all. I look forward to improving my skills with this software as I think that the style it allows you to achieve is very interesting and makes games look more fun and enjoyable to play.

These models are going to be used for creating a 2.5D platform game, a style of game I already planned on making, so to me this is great because I have a bunch of ideas already. Hopefully this will mean that my ‘Rabbit hop’ game will be able to make good progress to be put in my portfolio and to be played by other people. Next steps are to animate the rabbit and set up the basics for the game.

Urban Style Room Renders

room render 2room render 1

Above are some more updated renders of my Urban room for Matts room project. I am very happy with how it is currently looking, in my opinion, it looks very realistic and I am happy with the amount of effort I have been putting in. I have been working very hard, in my opinion, to make this room look as visually appealing as possible.

I understand that my rendering does need a lot of work but I think that my modelling is of a fairly good standard so far and I just need my rendering ability to improve so I can do my models and hard work its justice.

I’m really enjoying 3D modelling as I love how it allows me to be really creative. I look forward to advancing my 3D modelling skills and improving the quality of my models. I could definitely see a possible future in 3D modelling someday perhaps, but that’s in the future. For now, I just look forward to improving my skills in all aspects of the NextGen course and learning as much as possible.

Spaceship Game

In the last two lessons with Ant we have been working on creating a spaceship game. He helped us learn the basic script to make the game playable, but then it was up to us to adapt them and introduce other scripts to make the game enjoyable and fun to play.

So far I have; a spaceship which is fully controllable with a keyboard or controller, cannons which fire seeking missile which will track and destroy the spaceship on impact, motion sensitive mines which begin to track the spaceship to destroy it when the ship gets within a certain distance of them. As well as this I have also added in a motion sensitive door which opens once the ship is close enough to it and a level tracker in the top right corner of the screen.

I am very pleased with how the game is turning out so far, especially for it being early stages and being made within a short period of time. I feel like I have learned a lot of useful scripts that can be used in different games and contexts to enhance the enjoyment of a game. I am looking forward to expanding my game by introducing more mechanics and adding more levels and a main menu system to start creating a fully made game. As well as this I look forward to introducing these new mechanics into other games, such as my ball game, to improve them.

Next steps are going to be to adjust the camera angle as im not very happy with the way it looks, and also adding more colour to the walls and floor to make it look better with the other assets.

Spaceship Game

Low-Poly Racing Car 3D Models

As an independent project, I and Ethan have decided to work on our own racing game. Our aim for the game is to create a locally played, player versus player racing game. However, we want the game to be unconventional, in the hopes of making it more interesting and fun to play.

Some examples of features our game will possibly include our; avoiding various obstacles, dodging missiles and speeding around racing tracks. Along with these features, we also have loads of other ideas which we plan on including in the game.

As a part of making this game we have begun modelling various assets to put the game together. In this post, I have included to 2 low poly  3D models of racing cars which I have made for the game: one is a formula one car and the other is a hot rod style car. We plan on including a feature where the player can select the car they which to play with. All of the available cars in the game are going to be extremely different in style to add to the enjoyment of the game.

I am very happy with how these models have turned out, I believe for the demo of a game they could work very well when paired with the tileset that Ethan is making. Our next steps are going to be to make the basic scripts necessary for the game to work.
